FAQ

1.  Why should I join your CSA?  Can’t I just get your vegetables at the Farmer’s Market?
We reserve the best crop of vegetables for our CSA members.  Our Farm Share CSA  members are our first priority, and we plan our season around fulfilling our commitment to our members.  We love all of our customers dearly, but our CSA members invest in us financially and make our farm business possible!  Your vegetables will be carefully chosen for you each week, set aside in advance, and reserved just for you.  It is the best way to experience the wonderful variety of crops that our farm has to offer.

2. Is the produce organic?
We are Certified Naturally Grown, which means we are inspected and certified to be following the same national standards used for Organic Certification.  We use organic potting soil and fertilizer, and no chemical fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides are ever used on your food.  We believe we are growing some of the cleanest (and most nutritious) produce around!

3. What are the advantages of joining your CSA?
We believe the benefits are endless!  It’s part of why we do what we do.  In addition to supporting the local economy, you are receiving the freshest, most nutritious produce possible.  You will be exposed to new vegetables and experiment with new ways of cooking.  Children typically favor food from “their” farm, even vegetables they have never been known to eat.  And you will develop a relationship with us, the farmers who grow your food and learn more about how your food is grown.

4. When does the season run and what is my investment?
The season runs from May to November, and you will receive vegetables 29 out of the 31 weeks.  We build in two vacation weeks – one of your choice plus the week before Labor Day.  The total investment for our Farm Share CSA is $725, breaking down to just $25 a week!  (We think that’s a steal!)
You set your chosen vacation week in your account in our CSA software that you create when you sign up.

5. What is the payment schedule?
The first deposit of $250 is due at time of sign up (plus delivery fee if applicable**)
2nd deposit of $250 due by May 1, 2017
Final payment of $225 due by August 1, 2017
**Off-farm pick up options incur a seasonal delivery fee of $40

6. How many people does a Farm Share feed?
This is a tricky question because each family’s eating habits are different.  We have some couples who purchase our shares and say it is just the right amount for them, while we have some families of four who say it’s just a little too much for them.  It really depends on your eating habits, how much you cook at home each week, and how much your family loves vegetables!  We have had many families tell us they are able to eat more vegetables because of us, and their children are willing to eat more because our vegetables taste so much better than your average store bought veggie.

7. Can I split a share?
Yes, if you coordinate with the person you would like to split it with on your own.  We are unable to split shares on the farm, and please note that sometimes there may be items that are difficult to split (ie. a head of broccoli or cabbage or a zucchini).

8. What will be in my share each week?
Over the course of the season we grow more than 50 different varieties of produce. We aim for a mix of 7-10 different items each week, and the contents will vary according to the season or weather conditions.  We will send out an email prior to your delivery date letting you know what will most likely be in your share so you may plan your menu!  We specialize in greens, so we aim to provide our members with salad and/or cooking greens each week of the season.  If you would like to see samples of our weekly shares, please click here.

9. Can I pick and choose what is in my share each week?
No, but our season and our weekly shares are carefully planned out by us each week, and we try very hard to give you a desirable variety from week to week.  We plan crops to harvest in their prime season and pick each at its best. The share is a balanced mix of what our farm has available in the field each week. Many people love CSAs because they love an element of surprise each week, and they enjoy trying things they wouldn’t otherwise have tried. Our boxes also contain weekly recipes to give you tips on how to prepare items that you may not be familiar with. If you have a dietary restriction or would just like to switch out an item, we are sometimes able to accommodate this if you pick up at the farm or at the farmers’ market.

10.What if I miss a pick up day?
We cannot guarantee that your share is available for pick up at a different time or place than what you have signed up for. However, we know that we all slip up from time to time and we aim to bring unclaimed shares back to the farm as soon as possible. Please contact us to come out to the farm to pick up your share the next day.

11. What if I will be out of town more than the two vacation weeks?
We recommend having a friend or family member enjoy your share while you are gone. If that is not possible we are able to donate your share to an area food pantry. We are also usually able to accommodate providing you with two shares (a “double box”) the week after your “extra”vacation week. Setting up a “donate my share” week or a “double box” week is done in your account in our CSA software that you create when you sign up.

12. Should I bring my own bags to pick up?
Yes, please! We ask that our CSA members bring their own bags for picking up their produce. We often have extra plastic bags around, but it’s much more eco-friendly to bring your own. Typically 2 good sized bags are enough.

13. I get really excited when I open a box full of kale, lettuce, radishes, tomatoes, peppers, and more. I enjoy getting creative with my meals, and experimenting with new vegetables. Should I join your Farm Share CSA?
Yes, you sound like you would really enjoy our Farm Share CSA.  Please choose the right pick up spot for you and sign up today!

14.  I think vegetables are an important part of my household’s diet but I find the vegetables in the grocery store to be lacking in flavor and freshness. Should I join?
Yes!  You will be amazed at the difference in flavor and nutrition when you get your vegetables from us. Most of our vegetables are picked the day before your delivery, and only travel a short distance to get to you! The benefits to buying nutrient dense, organic, local produce are endless.

15.  Should I join your farm share if I don’t like to eat a lot of greens or salads?
We understand everyone has different diets and routines, but we also don’t want you to be overwhelmed by the amount of greens you will receive over the course of the season. We love greens here, we love to grow them for our customers, and we have a great reputation for growing high quality greens! Our salad greens and cooking greens are much more delicious than anything else you can buy, but if eating a significant amount of greens isn’t going to be part of your routine, then our Farm Share is likely not the right fit for you.  Unless you are planning a drastic diet change or plan to share your greens with a dear friend or neighbor, purchasing our vegetables via a farmers’ market may be the best choice for you.

16. Can I visit the farm?
We host a guided farm tour each spring to allow you to learn about how your food is grown, see how the soil looks, ask us questions, check on the tomatoes’ progress, peek in the greenhouses, etc. We also hold a CSA Social in the fall for a chance to say “Thank you!” for being a member, allow you to meet other members, and enjoy the farm together. Our farm stand is always open during the season for you to visit , and while we can’t stop work and give you a tour of the farm, we love having our customers visit!
