1. Why should I join your Farm Share? Can’t I just get your vegetables at the Farmer’s Market?
We reserve the best crop of vegetables for our Farm Share members. Our Farm Share members are our first priority, and we plan our season around fulfilling our commitment to our members. We love all of our customers dearly, but our Farm Share members invest in us financially and make our farm business possible on a different level! Your vegetables will be carefully harvested for you each week, set aside in advance, and reserved just for you. It is the best way to experience the wonderful variety of crops that our farm has to offer.
2. Is the produce organic?
We are Certified Naturally Grown, which means we are inspected and certified to be following the same national standards used for Organic Certification. We use organic potting soil and fertilizer, and no chemical fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides are ever used on your food. We believe we are growing some of the cleanest (and most nutritious) produce around!
3. What are the advantages of joining your Farm Share?
We believe the benefits are endless! It’s part of why we do what we do. In addition to supporting the local economy, you are receiving the freshest, most nutritious produce possible. You have the choice to be exposed to new vegetables and experiment with new ways of cooking. Children typically favor food from “their” farm, even vegetables they have never been known to eat. And you will develop a relationship with us, the farmers who grow your food and learn more about how your food is grown.
4. When does the season run and what is my investment?
Our Farm Share season runs from the first full week of May to the Saturday before Thanksgiving in November, and you choose a weekly or every-other-week share.
5. What is the payment schedule?
25% due at sign up
25% due April 15
25% due June 1
25% due August 15
OR – You may pay in full at sign up
Note: The prepaid amount (either in full or via payment plan) does not include the delivery fee that is charged per delivered order when picking up anywhere other than at our farm. The delivery fee is charged to your card on file on your pick up day or the next business day.
If you choose extra items, or a combination of items that are more expensive than the dollar value of the average weekly share that you pre-paid, the overage amount is charged to your card on file on your pick up day or the next business day.
If you choose fewer items/ a lower dollar value than the average weekly share that you pre-paid, the difference is credited to your membership account on your pick up day or the next business day. Any credit on your account will be used to cover future overages before any amount is charged to your card on file.
6. How many people does a Farm Share feed?
This is a tricky question because each family’s eating habits are different. We have some couples who purchase our weekly Farm Share and say it is just the right amount for them, while we have some families of four who say it’s just a little too much for them. It really depends on your eating habits, how much you cook at home each week, and how much your family loves vegetables! We have had many families tell us they are able to eat more vegetables because of us, and their children are willing to eat more because our vegetables taste so much better than your average store bought veggies.
7. Can I split a share?
Yes, if you coordinate with the person you would like to split it with on your own. We are unable to split shares on the farm, and please note that sometimes there may be items that are difficult to split (ie. a head of broccoli or cabbage or a zucchini). The best way to “share a share” is to alternate pick up days.
8. What will be in my share each week?
Over the course of the season we grow about 40 different varieties of produce. We aim for a choice from 15-25 different items we harvest each week, and the contents will vary according to the season or weather conditions. We send out an email two days prior to your delivery date letting you know what your customizeable share contains. Each week you will have a window of time to make changes to your share or order extras if you like. You can easily add a loaf of our bread to a week’s share, or order extra salad to plan for a dinner party. We specialize in greens, so we aim to provide our members with salad and/or cooking greens each week of the season. If you would like to see samples of our weekly shares, please click here.
9. Can I pick and choose what is in my share each week?
Each week that you are scheduled to have a share, the software that we use will create a default share for you, consisting of some of our most common items. You will receive an email at 10am two days before your pick up day. This email will list your share contents and also invite you to customize it to your preference. You can make changes to your share until 6am on the day before your pick up day.
10.What if I miss a pick up day?
We cannot guarantee that your share is available for pick up at a different time or place than what you have signed up for. If you pick up at our farm, Good Health Herbs, Hallsley, or the Farmers’ Market @ St. Stephens, most of the time we will bring your items back to our walk in cooler at some point after the pick up window closes. You are welcome to email us to arrange to pick up your share at our farm the next day.
If you pick up in Bon Air/at Good Foods Grocery, all items are donated after the pick up window ends. No items are brought back to our farm.
11. What if I will be out of town?
You can put a week’s share on hold. After the week in question, the software will put credit on your account for the value of the held share. That credit is then available on your account for you to use to place an order in the future on a week when you’re not already scheduled to have a share, or to add additional items to future shares.
12. Should I bring my own bags to pick up?
Yes, please! We ask that our Farm Share members bring their own bags for picking up their produce. We often have extra plastic bags around, but it’s much more eco-friendly to bring your own. Typically 2 good sized bags are enough.
13. I get really excited when I open a box full of kale, lettuce, radishes, tomatoes, peppers, and more. I enjoy getting creative with my meals, and experimenting with new vegetables. Should I join your Farm Share CSA?
Yes, you sound like you would really enjoy our Farm Share CSA. Please choose the right pick up spot for you and sign up today!
14. I think vegetables are an important part of my household’s diet but I find the vegetables in the grocery store to be lacking in flavor and freshness. Should I join?
Yes! You will be amazed at the difference in flavor and nutrition when you get your vegetables from us. Most of our vegetables are picked the day before your delivery, and only travel a short distance to get to you! The benefits to buying nutrient dense, organic, local produce are endless.
15. Should I join your farm share if I don’t like to eat a lot of greens or salads?
We understand everyone has different diets and routines, but we also don’t want you to be overwhelmed by the amount of greens you will receive over the course of the season. We love greens here, we love to grow them for our customers, and we have a great reputation for growing high quality greens! Our salad greens and cooking greens are much more delicious than anything else you can buy, and you can usually swap out greens in your share for something else. But if eating a significant amount of greens isn’t going to be part of your routine, then our Farm Share is likely not the right fit for you. Unless you are committed to a drastic diet change or plan to share your greens with a dear friend or neighbor, purchasing our vegetables via a farmers’ market may be the best choice for you.
16. Can I visit the farm? Our farm stand is always open during the season for you to visit , and while we can’t stop work and give you a tour of the farm, we love having our customers visit.
We hold a Farm Share Member Social in the fall for a chance to say “Thank you!” for being a member, allow you to meet other members, and enjoy the farm together.
