Surprise Livestock; Broadfork Orders & Market for 5/4

We are indeed a vegetable and flower farm, but this week had some livestock surprises for us. Most unexpected was this visitor:

Yikes! Luckily she didn’t make her way inside our fence. She lives at a neighbors homestead down the road and apparently made a break from her pen. While we love these sweet animals, they can cause awesome destruction very quickly to vegetable fields, so this visit caused us a little anxiety.

More welcome and planned for were these ladies:

We were preparing for them to arrive in May…

(see our almost-6-year-old hard at work on the frames here)…but a few hours after the pig sighting we were pleasantly surprised to receive a calm phone call from the post office, asking us to please pick up the humming packages as quickly as we could.

We set to work putting them in their new homes. Inside that clump of bees is a small box containing the Queen. She goes in first. Then the rest of the colony gets poured in over her.

Moments later, literally, a few chickens arrived.

A few weeks back we had an unfortunate incident in our chicken yard with a neighbor’s pair of dogs who like the taste of chicken. These sweet neighbors were enormously kind and offered to replace the lost birds with some chicks they were raising. The darlings were now big enough to introduce into our flock.

I’m happy to report they are all getting along well enough, though with keeping a little distance. Updates promised…for bees and chickens as well as any potential hogs.

On our market tables this weekend you will find..

216   Vegetables…
