August – Harvesting, Enjoying, Preserving

The rains have been good to us, plants are growing, and the eating this time of year is out of this world.

This week saw more carrot seeding. These carrots will carry us into the winter, when they become deliciously sweet, which is all the more cherished in January.  (The seeds are under that tan cover.)

Tomatoes are headed into jars around here. And into peach salsa – what a perfect August combo.

If you have been out of town, this is what our booth is looking a little like these days:

And we can’t get enough of peppers and onions – they are serving as the base of almost every meal around here:

I just love the colors this time of year. We also dry a ton of these peppers in the food dehydrator to toss into soups, stews, and cooked grains all winter long. (If you’re interested in a bulk pepper purchase for the same reason, just let us know.)

For markets this weekend, we have harvested:

Basil, Bell Peppers (purple and green), Rosa Bianca Eggplant,  Black Beauty Eggplant, Jalapeno peppers,  Malabar Spinach, Okra, Onions, Perpetual Spinach, Potatoes, Salad Mix, Summer Squash, Heirloom, Hybrid, and Cherry Tomatoes…
…and Bread, Eggs, and Bouquets of Flowers.
(Pictured above is Dan starting seeds, which he does many, many times a day, for many, many days of the season to grow all this food. Thank you, Dan!)
Note:
* We WILL be at the Brandermill market on Saturday, August 11th, but not South of the James. (We’ll miss you RVA but will enjoy our friends Fiona and Jeff’s wedding nuptials!)
* Mid-week produce delivery to Good Health Herbs (Brandermill) for the week of August 6th will happen on Tuesday, August 7th instead of Wednesday like usual.
* There will be no mid-week produce delivery during the week of August 13th.
Enjoy!
