We’ve embraced this “Polar Vortex” that we’ve been seeing mention of on internet weather sites and social media. (We don’t have a TV to provide dramatization and regular updates.) We’re hoping these low temps are freezing some bugs and soil disease into oblivion.
Farm work actually involving soil and plants is sparse these days. The plants in the high tunnels are growing…slowly.
We have some new transplantings of salad and asian spinach going in the ground soon. Planning work for 2014 continues, and non-farm duties call.
Our house has things like this going on all around right now:
If you stop by the Farm Stand, please pardon the dust/mud/lumber that results from construction work.
In the past few growing seasons we have worked late hours into each evening, until dusk. We have as a goal for 2014 that our farm work days end at 5 pm, allowing for much needed family time. Winter forces this on us, thankfully, and we like to carve out time for painting and the like in the evening hours. Peace…
We’ll be taking a short break from delivering orders on Wednesdays while winter settles in deeply and our plants are less abundant. The Farm Stand will continue to be open daily, stocked with what we have to offer.
This Week’s Harvest:
Carrots, Lettuce (red and green), Radish (sweet giant), and Salad Mix…plus Pepper Jelly, and our Naturally Leavened, Hearth Baked Bread.
Recipe Suggestion (aka: What we are eating these days!): Roasted Vegetable Soup
