Soil Prep, Salad Love (& Orders for 3/8)

Winter is still with us, but we are actively preparing for spring. Soil amendments are being spread this week, and worked into the soil. See our namesake, the broadfork, being put to good use here by our amazing crew member, Sara: DSC_0017DSC_0016

Some brassicas (that’s the kale/collards/etc plant family) will move out of the seedling greenhouse in the next week and be planted in the ground. (We can hear your cheers of joy! Thank you!)


The greenhouse continues to give us love this week, with head lettuces (above), and salad mix (below) available for Market Share CSA members to order. Our current fave salad dressing is this homemade Goddess Dressing (tahini, garlic, soy sauce, etc.) We highly recommend.


We also have chard available – the leaves are smaller than the ones we bunch during the main growing season. We’re selling them bagged, and we recommend eating them sauteed with any combination of oils and spices. We have been enjoying them sauteed with garlic and ginger, then mixed with rice noodles and this peanut sauce. Delicious!


Forest Days at Broadfork Farm
A spring session for Homeschooled students, ages 5-8 and 9-12
On Tuesdays in April, we will be hosting a nature based session for homeschooled students, featuring a fusion of forest and farm learning, led by our amazing colleague Heather Jeffrey. Registration details, including cost and exact dates, will be shared here next week.

This Week’s Harvest:
Chard (baby leaves, bagged), Salad Mix, Head Lettuce (red)…plus Pepper Jelly, and our Naturally Leavened, Hearth Baked Bread.

Recipe Suggestion Recap:
-Chard, sauteed with garlic and ginger and served with rice noodles and this peanut sauce.
– Our salad mix and head lettuce topped with this Tahini (“Goddess”) Dressing.

2014 Market Share CSA Members: Choose your selection through our Online Store to order for pick up on Saturday at our farm or Good Health Herbs from 9am – 12:30pm (in Brandermill) or in the Byrd Park area of Richmond on Sunday morning (details in online store.) 

Everyone else: Please sign up for our 2014 Market Share CSA and start placing orders now. Our Farm Stand will open up again as soon as there is enough produce to fill it, and we will return to our booth at the farmers’ markets in March or April.

Our amazing Farm Share CSA provides you with a weekly share of vegetables on Wednesdays, May through September (summer season) in exchange for an investment in our farm in the preceding winter or spring. Richmond Area Sustainable Farm Tour Weekend: September 20 & 21, 2014

Shake the Hand that Feeds You!
