Farm Week 8 (Orders for 2/22/2014)

Notably, today is farm email day and the world outside is not covered with snow!043

It is also notable that yesterday we finally received the supplies to build our new seedling greenhouse. This was luckily the first time it has ever taken 6 weeks for us to receive an order. Yowzers. (And, no, we aren’t opening a concession stand in the greenhouse, despite the “Hot Dawg” box pictured above. That’s just a heater.)

044

These past few days of spring like weather have us a bit giddy. 049

We have to remind ourselves that it is appropriate for the tomato plants to still be so far away from transplant-size. There is still plenty of winter left, we are sure.

045

Salad greens and carrots are still coming out of the greenhouse, and new baby plants are going in the ground in greater numbers these days.

047

We keep a couple of colonies of bees, with Janet’s father (who lives next door) being the head beekeeper. These warm days have allowed the bees the chance to cart out the bodies of their hive-mates who have passed on. Not the most cheery update, but it’s part of the yearly cycle around here. Some of them naturally die off during the winter, and thus their remains must be taken care of. These bees really have quite a system, and we hope to be able to photograph and share even more about them with our readers this season.
