It’s Cold. And Snowy. (But still taking orders for 1/25)

It is so strange to see things covered in white around here for so many days in one week. It’s also strange to now be living in a pink house, but that is another story.

Winter work around here continues. It feels like a lot of busy-ness while also waiting for the most important things. We’re waiting for the delivery of the (special order) materials to build our new seedling greenhouse. We’re waiting for the ground to dry up (and now thaw) in order to be able to dig holes for the new barn construction. (So far all we’ve managed to do is let the tractor sink in mud.)

Luckily conditions are perfect for moving around compost piles and building new ones. Ladies and gentlemen: please see here the compost (below) that will feed the soil that will feed your vegetables during the 2015 season. Yes, we have to plan ahead.

Here is some finished compost that we made (below). We are really pleased with the quality, and so we have designated it for our precious tomato crop this year. We want them to get the really good stuff.

So, it’s late January and we are planning for tomatoes. And cucumbers. And many more plants, too. (Yesterday our 4 year old son was day-dreaming about cucumbers for his salad. He knows he has to wait until summer [maybe late spring?], and he’s already excited about the day they are ready.)

For now, we have carrots.

And some greenhouse salad mix. (Much of what we had in the greenhouses has not survived these extra-cold temps of late. 9 degrees is cold.) Plus a few other usual suspects.
